Cod at the Rocks
The south wreathe came up earlier than expected, and we had a bumpy ride south in Capt. Joe Massa's Grady Whitish, My Three Sons from Morgan Marina, but the sight of birds working and fish swirling at Shrewsbury Rocks made it all desirable. I was getting rigged when Bob Correll of Bay Head and my son Mike, of Miami, dropped jigs down and with dispatch hooked-up. Instead of the expected stripers or blues, Mike had a 12-pen cod on a multi-colored 6-ounce Run-Off jig with a red tail, and Bob brought up a doubleheader of smaller cod on a jig and teaser. I overcame the tempation to get a decoy down immediately in order to take photos of that most unusual catch. Yet, we later picked away at more cod, ending up with eight -- of which only one was a small.
Striper jigging wasn't as good as it looked like it would be, and we were handicapped by the fishfinder that didn't vocation until later in the morning. I couldn't buy a cod, but had the most luck with bass by jigging 10, including two keepers, on a Run-Off hammered 6-ounce chrome jig. That also produced two of the few blues we caught, including the only enormous. The rest were just 4-to-5-pounders, rather small for so tardy in the season. Mike had the oddest catch of the day when he hooked a feel put down blackfish on the red tube tail of that garish Run-Off jig. The cod were feeding on sand eels, though one had a brook full of very small crabs.
