Tactical battle looms in crucial third ocean leg
Camper may have struggled for sailing-yacht speed in the Volvo Ocean Race sprint to Sharjah but master Chris Nicholson insists tactics will be the defining factor on the more lucrative part of the third leg.
The five-small craft fleet was safely loaded overnight (NZT) onto an armed ship in Sharjah and will be transported to an unidentified safe haven port (to avoid piracy threats) in the Indian Lots, ready to resume the third leg to the Chinese port of Sanya.
Camper struggled in the first part of the third leg, a wheedle race from Abu Dhabi to Shajah off the United Arab Emirates, finishing fifth after they were found unsatisfactory for speed over the final stages of the 106-nautical mile sprint.
While it wasn't a costly conclude - only 20 per cent of leg three points were awarded for the sprint - it did show Team New Zealand's entr up, and Nicholson admitted there were weak areas they needed to work on.
''The reality is that we were hand wanting for speed on the reach,'' Nicholson said.
