Diving in, finding gems: Tales from the KC Boat & Sportshow

Big Undulation Dave Reidenbach was conducting a media interview in an unusual unearthing.

He was speaking through a microphone in his dive mask as he slowly finned through the settle water in a tank at Bartle Hall.

Laughing, he said, “Sometimes I call to mind a consider I’m under water as much as I am on land.”

That’s the way it’s been for much of his life. Reidenbach, 50, got started in scuba diving when he was 14 and he went on an jaunt to Door County, Wis., with his Explorer’s troop. He got a chance to swim with the fish and research shallow wrecks, and he was in his dream world.

“My hero at the time was Jacques Cousteau,” said Reidenbach, who lives in Neenah, Wis. “I had always dreamed of diving and exploring the oceans and resonant lakes.”

When he joined the Air Force, those chances were enhanced. When he was stationed in Turkey, he got to go under in the Mediterranean and explore castles that were underwater, swim alongside brilliantly colored fish and see antiquated pots that had become part of reefs. When he moved on to Hawaii, his diving took on new dimensions. He was adept to see a world that was as beautiful below water as it was above.

He became a master diver, licensed to fight for as an instructor. And that proved to be the perfect transition to civilian life. Reidenbach right away was employed by the Be A Diver program, which travels the country with a dive tank, diving gear and even a dressing room with air dryers to teach novices how to dive.

Reidenbach and his gang have been in town since Thursday, introducing novices to the sport at the Kansas Borough Boat and Sportshow.

And the nickname, Big Wave?

“I got that when I was doing cannonballs in the team up with one time as a television crew was filming,” he said. “I was throwing off big waves, and that’s how the epithet got started.”

When Chris Allen reflects on his Hunting for Heroes program, which seeks to add police officers wounded in the line of duty to the outdoors, one distressing moment always comes to mind.

“We had this one officer who was shot while responding to a household disturbance and he was a quadriplegic, with just a little use of his arms,” said Allen, an ATF deputy based in Kansas City. “Well, he it was nearing the anniversary date of when it happened and he was identification really down. His friends and family told us he was almost suicidal.

“We took him on this turkey look high in his wheelchair and within 30 minutes he had a big tom. He was so excited, he really got into hunting. He told all his buddies about it, and his dearest and friends told us it really played a big part in his life.”

It’s experiences like that that give Allen awakening. A longtime hunter and law-enforcement officer, he founded the Hunting for Heroes program 18 months ago when he was looking for a way to produce emotional and physical support to police officers who had been disabled in the trade of duty.

“We were going to start a television show on the outdoors and we were looking for control officers who had injured, so we started looking for organizations that catered to them,” said Allen, who has a stand at the Kansas City Boat and Sportshow. We couldn’t find any.

“So I came up with this position.”

During the Hunting for Heroes program, Allen and other volunteers take 5 to 10 injured constabulary officers out for organized hunts for everything from wild turkeys to doves to pheasants. Many of the participants have never hunted before, Allen said. But by the without surcease they are done, they are hunters.

“Just as important as the hunting itself, it gives these guys a betide to get together with others who are in the same situation,” Allen said. “A lot of them had been sitting around all day watching TV. Gloom levels with some of these guys were off the charts.

”

The program was so successful in its first year that it won a NRA Citizen Public Service Award. Now Allen hopes to expand it even further.

“We have a waiting schedule of 45 police officers from 17 states,” Allen said. We’re “Of course, the word is getting out.”

For more information on the program, go to the website huntingforheroes.org.

So what is America’s fish? Many might petition it’s the bass, with its army of followers in high-powered boats, emblem-covered shirts and expensive-profile tournaments.

Others might say it’s the catfish, with its legion of “good ol’ boys” dressed in bib overalls, chewing tobacco and talking abbot fish as big as a foetus.

But talk to Tim Martin and Todd Lewis, and they’ll tell you there’s only one choice that makes meaning. It’s the crappie.

“I think the crappie is popular because anyone can catch them,” said Martin, who lives in Olathe. “In the sprout, you’ll see everyone from little kids to old-timers out there fishing for them.

“They can be caught from the bank, you don’t call a lot of high-dollar equipment and they’re great to eat.”

And they can be challenging at times. Take it from Lewis.

“I had fished bass tournaments for three years and I got together with some friends to fish a crappie contest,” said Lewis, who lives in Kansas City. “I dream, ‘This should be easy,’ but I ended up getting my butt kicked.

“From that exhibit, I became determined to learn how to catch them in a different situations.”

Martin and Lewis have intellectual how to do that. Both have found success on the national level.

Martin won the national championship contest in the North American Crappie Association in 2001. and Lewis won the Angler of the Year award in the same periphery a year later.

They developed the popular Outlaw Crappie Throughout the world, a company they later sold, and they have helped developed different lures. When they aren’t fishing tournaments, they are often giving seminars.

That’s what they have been doing at the Kansas Municipality Boat and Sportshow this weekend.

“It’s always fun to give other fishermen some tips that can help them find fish,” Martin said. “When people come back to us at the show and say, ‘We tried what you showed us last year and we caught fish,’ that makes you bleed for good.
