That’s why his most fresh project — to build a three-quarter scale replica of a 1930’s raceway boat from scratch— was one of his biggest challenges to date. Winsome three years to complete the craft, it also registers as one of his longest projects ever.

“I wanted to figure a boat like this because it’s very unique from what I typically build,” said Balcer, of Munger, who considers himself a self-employed specialized handyman. “They don’t set up them like this anymore.”

Adding to the mystique of this particular project is the gest that accompanies the boat.

Balcer says he built a replica of the race meeting boat “My Sin,” which originally was constructed in 1938, measuring 24 feet in in detail. Balcer’s model is 20 feet long.

The master boat was owned by Zalmon Guy Simmons, owner of Simmons Mattress Co. He purchased the knockabout from Ventnor Boat Works in New Jersey for $107,000. As the story goes, Simmons’ mate told him it was a sin to purchase a boat at that cost, and so, the vessel got it’s name.
