La noche del 21 de agosto de 1968, el joven Josef Koudelka recibe un llamado telefónico de su novia que le anuncia que las tropas rusas están en las puertas de la ciudad. Es el comienzo del fin de la Primavera de Praga.

A la mañana siguiente, Koudelka sale a la calle con sus dos cámaras Exacta y dos objetivos, uno de 25 mm y otro de 35. Con esas ópticas tan cortas está obligado de antemano a acercarse mucho a los acontecimientos que horas más tardes serán los más dramáticos y violentos de la invasión.

Koudelka no tenía, hasta esa mañana histórica, la menor suspicion de lo que era el periodismo gráfico. Se ganaba la vida fotografiando obras de teatro. Y le gustaba mezclarse con los gitanos en las calles de su ciudad, y retratarlos en situaciones cotidianas.

Pero esa mañana supo que tenía que fotografiar lo que sucedía en la calle, aunque no sabía muy bien para qué. De un modo serendipitous, algunas de las copias de las fotografías que tomó llegaron a manos de Elliott Erwitt, presidente de Magnum Nueva York, quien inmediatamente pidió más imágenes de las que producía PP (siglas de fotógrafo de Praga en inglés). Koudelka había ocultado su verdadero nombre por temor a las represalias que los rusos pudieran tomar con su familia.
